Frequently Asked Questions

At YaMusic, we offer lessons for piano, voice, guitar, bass and ukulele. These are some of the most frequently asked questions by prospective students and their families. If you have any other questions for us, please feel free to get in touch!

What lesson length do I need?

Group Lessons: These are appropriately timed for each age group depending on where they are in their development.

Private Lessons: Beginner-Intermediate students: 30-45 minute lessons Intermediate-Advanced students: 45-60 minute lessons

Do I need an instrument at home?

Yes. Practice is key to developing your skills and making the most out of your music lessons. For our Yamaha group lessons we recommend a 61 – 88 key keyboard with weighted/touch sensitive keys OR an acoustic piano. This will be enough to get students started on the right path. As they develop their skills, it will be necessary to upgrade to a more sophisticated instrument. Students who are at an intermediate level should be playing on an acoustic upright / grand / or CVP keyboard. Advanced students should be playing on an acoustic upright or grand. Yamaha has a rebate program to help alleviate the cost of a quality instrument by giving back some money to put towards Yamaha music lessons. Please ask us for more info!

For Violin, Guitar, Bass and Ukulele, please ask your instructor what the best instrument would be for you or your child.

How much practice is necessary?

This depends on the age and level of the student. It is key that practice be made into routine and happen every day. This is where progress will be made. We recommend:

  • Young students and beginners: 10-20 minutes a day
  • Elementary students: 20-30 minutes a day
  • Intermediate students: 30-45 minutes a day
  • Advanced students: 45-60 minutes a day
What books do I need and where do I get them?

All Group programs come with materials provided by the Yamaha Music Education System. For private lessons, your teacher will assess your level and your goals and advise which books would be best for you and also let you know where they can be purchased.

Do you teach adults?

Is that even a question?? There is no required age to start learning an instrument! We love teaching adults!

Do you offer drop-in lessons?

Yes! We have some drop-in options to accommodate the busy schedules of adult students. You can contact us for more information!

How old does my child have to be to start lessons?

Private lessons are offered for ages 8 and older.

Do your students get opportunities to perform?

We love providing students with a chance to show off their skills. We offer 2 recitals a year as well as a Gala concert at the end of the year for Group students.

Do your students do exams?

Yamaha has their own examination system and exams are often done “in house” with examiners coming from other parts of Alberta and Canada to facilitate the exams. Yamaha offers grade levels starting from beginner levels all the way to teacher certification. Royal Conservatory Examinations are also an option for private Piano, Violin, Guitar and Voice.

Do you offer group lessons?

Group lessons are our jam! We designed our school around being able to offer the best quality group lessons around. We offer groups for keyboard, violin, guitar and ukulele and plan on offering more groups in the future.

Our programs give a wide variety of exposure to many genres of music, but if you are looking to study something specific, just let us know and we can match you up with the best teacher for you.
